Some common programs that can be removed from Start-up:
Windows Java Runtime (jusched.exe) - Java is a programming language required by many Windows programs, however, the Windows Java runtime stays in your system tray looking for updates and generally wastes CPU cycles and system memory. If a program requires the Java runtime it will open it when needed. There is no reason to have it as part of your Windows start-up.
Media Players including QuickTime (qttask.exe), Real Player (realsched.exe), Divx (divxupdate.exe) - If you want to watch a movie you can open your media player at any time, there is no reason to have it loaded at start-up and constantly running in the background collecting information about you and taking up valuable resources.
Messaging programs including MSN (msn.exe), Windows Live Messenger (msnmsgr.exe), Skype (skype.exe) - These are all examples of programs that unless you use them constantly you could easily remove from your start-up menu and simply start them whenever you want to chat or receive calls and messages.
